Is your pool leaking or losing water to evaporation?
Sun, wind, humidity, water temperature and water features all affect evaporation. Rain can hide water loss, while an automatic fill valve can replace lost water before you notice the level falling. A daily drop alone does not identify a leak.
Compare water loss with a simple bucket test
1. Start with the pool at its normal operating level. Put a stable, leak-free bucket on an accessible pool step, partly submerged, and fill it with pool water. Keep the bucket rim above the pool water.
2. Mark the starting water level inside the bucket and the pool level on the outside. Temporarily turn off the automatic fill, if you can do so safely. Keep the usual circulation schedule and record the setup.
3. Avoid swimming, refilling and backwashing during the test. After about 24 hours, measure how far each level dropped. Repeat after rain, splashing or a tipped bucket because these can spoil the comparison.
4. If the pool loses more water than the bucket, a leak is suspected. The test does not locate it. Share both measurements and the elapsed time when requesting service.
Record the clues before your appointment
Note when the loss began, how often you add water, recent repairs and whether the spa level changes overnight. Photographs of damp ground, visible equipment drips and the waterline help explain the pattern. Keep the pool filled for testing; do not drain it to search for a leak.

How professional pool leak detection works
Florida Pool Tech investigates the pool, connected plumbing and equipment together. Finding a damp area or a visible crack is only a starting point: the inspection needs to establish whether that location is actually losing water.
1. Review the water-loss pattern
Tell us about the pool and spa arrangement, automatic fill, water features and recent work. Water loss that changes with pump operation can guide testing, but it does not prove which pipe or fitting is leaking.
2. Test the suspected systems
Depending on the pool and symptoms, testing may include dye checks at suspect fittings and cracks, pressure testing of isolated plumbing lines, and electronic listening methods. Different tests answer different questions. Pressure testing checks whether an isolated line holds; further investigation helps locate the failure.
3. Match the repair to the source
A leaking skimmer may need sealing or replacement depending on its condition and connection to the shell. Underground plumbing repairs may require access through soil or decking. Equipment leaks can involve unions, valves, seals or housings. Light-area leaks require evaluation of the niche, conduit and surrounding shell; replacing a bulb alone does not resolve those leaks.
4. Review the work and follow-up
Discuss the findings, proposed repair and access requirements before work begins. For excavation or skimmer replacement, ask how deck removal, restoration and finish matching are addressed in the estimate. Continue measuring the water level after the work under comparable conditions, and report ongoing loss for review.

Investigate unexplained water loss before selecting a new pool finish or deck. A cosmetic renovation does not automatically repair a hidden plumbing leak. Identifying the source first helps the renovation proposal include the necessary repair and access work.

How much does pool leak detection cost?

Ask which accessible repairs, if any, are included and which require a separate estimate. A water-loss symptom alone is not enough to price the repair accurately.
Should the pool be full and clean for testing?
Tell our team if the water is low, cloudy or green before the appointment. Normal water level and clear water help with inspection of submerged areas. Confirm preparation instructions when scheduling, and do not drain the pool yourself. If the pump draws air or loses prime, stop it and ask for guidance.
Does water stopping at the skimmer or light prove the location?
No. A level that appears to stabilize can be a useful clue, but connected plumbing, more than one leak and changing conditions can produce misleading patterns. A controlled inspection is needed before choosing a repair.
Can you find an underground leak without digging up the deck?
Testing is used to narrow the affected line and locate the problem before opening an area. Access for the actual repair depends on the pipe route, depth, deck and nearby structures. No-dig access or invisible restoration cannot be assumed for every pool.
How long will detection and repair take?
The time depends on the number of systems to test, visibility, access and the failure found. Detection and repair may be separate visits, particularly when excavation, replacement parts or restoration are involved.
