St. Petersburg Pool Heater Case Studies

Heater Circuit-Board and Fuel-Configuration Assessment in St. Petersburg
July 2026

Problem: An equipment assessment found a burned main circuit board in the pool heater. The spa actuator was also no longer functional.

Diagnosis: The heater was marked as having been converted to natural gas, while the homeowner reported that the property used propane. The technician recorded that discrepancy alongside the board damage. The pool pump responded to the Jandy automation system, helping distinguish its operation from the failed heater and actuator components.

Recommendation: The technician recommended a replacement propane heater and a replacement spa actuator. The proposed heater selection reflected the reported fuel supply, making the fuel configuration part of the replacement discussion as well as the damaged control board.

Header Drain-Plug Leak Diagnosed in St. Petersburg
May 2026

Problem: Water was leaking from the pool heater.

Diagnosis: Inspection traced the leak to the drain plug at the heater header rather than to the surrounding circulation plumbing.

Recommendation: Replacement of the header drain plug was specified to correct the documented leak.

High-Pressure Switch Diagnosed and Replaced in St. Petersburg
February–March 2026

Problem: A heat pump displayed an HP fault and would not operate normally.

Diagnosis: The technician first confirmed adequate water flow, then bypassed the high-pressure switch and observed the unit fire. Operating pressures were reviewed with Hayward; they were slightly low but not low enough to prevent operation, supporting replacement of the switch as the next repair.

Solution: The high-pressure switch was replaced.

Result: The heat pump returned to operation. The technician also recommended placing rodent traps around the heater to reduce the risk of animals entering the cabinet.

Leaking Heat Exchanger Diagnosed in St. Petersburg
February 2026

Problem: The pool heater was operating when the technician arrived, but opening the unit revealed a leak at the heat exchanger.

Diagnosis: The inspection identified a failed heat exchanger. The technician recorded that the unit's operation was associated with water pressure rather than normal refrigerant pressure, so the fact that the heater was running did not establish that it was functioning correctly.

Recommendation: The heater was shut down after the leak was found, and replacement of the failed unit was recommended.

Result: The failed heater was left shut down, and the inspection established the reason for the replacement recommendation.

HI-Code Heater Sensor and Capacitor Diagnosis in St. Petersburg
January 2026

Problem: A St. Petersburg pool heater displayed an HI fault code.

Diagnosis: The high-pressure switch retained continuity during testing. The manufacturer’s diagnostic guidance instead pointed to water-temperature sensors reporting an excessively high reading, and the technician also found a failed fan run capacitor.

Recommendation: Replacement of the heater’s water-temperature sensor and fan run capacitor was proposed. The technician also documented a replacement-heater option so the owner could compare repair and replacement scopes.

Heat-Pump Fan Motor Diagnosed and Replaced in St. Petersburg
December 2025

Problem: The heat-pump fan assembly was not operating correctly.

Diagnosis: Testing showed the fan motor turning slowly and producing a burning odor. The unit was shut down, and replacement of the fan motor was recommended.

Solution: A replacement fan motor was installed in the Pentair UltraTemp heat pump.

Result: The heat pump was returned to operation and left at a 75-degree setting as requested.

Heat-Pump Capacitor Diagnosis and Repair in St. Petersburg
November 2025

Problem: The heat-pump compressor would not start.

Diagnosis: Testing identified a failed run capacitor, and replacement of both the compressor and fan capacitors was recommended.

Solution: The compressor and fan run capacitors were replaced at the same St. Petersburg property.

Result: The heater returned to operation after the capacitor repair.

Storm-Flooded Heater Diagnosed in St. Petersburg

October 2025

Problem: A St. Petersburg pool heater displayed a BD fault after having been flooded during an earlier storm.

Diagnosis: Inspection found corrosion developing on the control-board components and rust beginning on the heater sensors.

Recommendation: Heater replacement was recommended because of the documented flood damage and internal corrosion.

Max-E-Therm 400K Gas Heater Installed and Converted to Propane in St. Petersburg
May 2025

Problem: The St. Petersburg pool project required replacement of its gas heater and configuration for the property’s propane fuel supply.

Solution: A Pentair Max-E-Therm HD 400,000-BTU pool heater was installed with the required plumbing, electrical and gas connections. The new unit was then converted from its natural-gas configuration to LP propane using the specified conversion components.

Result: The technician’s closeout confirms that the propane conversion was completed and the heater was operating.

Heater Sensor Diagnosis and Repair in St. Petersburg
December 2024

Diagnosis: In December 2024, we inspected a St. Petersburg pool heater and found a sensor wiring issue. The diagnostic notes describe the stack-flue sensor wire as pulled from the high-limit sensor and state that sensor replacement was required.

Solution: A separate repair invoice for the same customer and service property, dated one week later, records installation of a new stack flue sensor. This links the original diagnosis to the specific replacement part installed.

Result: The repair closeout confirms that the heater was back up and running. The technician left it operating at the homeowner's request. The two records establish the identified sensor issue, the completed component replacement and the operating result.

Planning Your Project

If you need heater service, provide the equipment model and the operating symptoms; a component repair and a full replacement involve different scopes of work.

When the heater will not start or keep heating

Record the exact display message and whether the problem occurs in pool mode, spa mode or both. A heater that starts and then shuts down presents a different diagnostic path from a unit with no display. Tell us if the problem began after filter service, a pump change, a power interruption or a change to the automation schedule.

The heater depends on the circulation system and its controls. A low-flow message can involve the filter, valve positions, pump operation or the heater's sensing components. The message identifies a condition to investigate; it does not, by itself, identify the part to replace. Gas ignition, combustion and electrical checks belong with a qualified professional.

A heater fault does not by itself establish that a complete replacement is necessary. Discuss inspection findings, equipment condition and the proposed repair before comparing replacement options.

✓ Identify the affected equipment
✓ Review the existing installation
✓ Separate necessary and optional work
✓ Identify related plumbing or controls
✓ Review the written estimate

What belongs in a heater repair estimate?

A useful proposal names the diagnosed fault, the component being repaired or replaced and any related plumbing or control work. Review the equipment's overall condition and parts availability alongside the repair price. A replaceable sensor or switch and a badly deteriorated heat exchanger can lead to very different recommendations.

For a replacement, compare the complete installed scope: heater model, equipment-pad arrangement, necessary utility connections, plumbing changes and control integration. Ask which work is included and which requires separate coordination. Share the purchase date, serial number and any warranty documents so coverage can be checked before you assume that parts, labor or a complete replacement are covered.

For an installation, explain how you use the pool and spa and what equipment is already present. The heating approach, site arrangement and system connections belong in the planning discussion.

✓ Share equipment labels and photos
✓ Describe the intended result
✓ Discuss access to the work area
✓ Confirm compatible connections
✓ Review operation and handover

Choose heating around the way you swim

Explain whether you want to maintain pool temperature through the season, heat a spa for occasional use or warm the pool for scheduled visits. A heat pump draws heat from the surrounding air; its performance changes with conditions. Gas heating has different fuel-supply and installation requirements. The best comparison starts with your temperature goals, available utilities and existing system.

Pool size, starting water temperature, wind exposure, use of a cover and equipment capacity affect the heating plan. Avoid choosing a unit from pool gallons alone or expecting a fixed heat-up time in every season. Include space for manufacturer-required clearances, airflow, drainage and future service access when discussing placement. Ask how the heater and pump schedules will work together after installation.

St. Petersburg Pool Heater Questions

If your pool is losing water, equipment is leaking, or the finish is aging, we can inspect the problem and recommend the right repair path.

Does water under a heat pump mean it is leaking?

Not necessarily. A running heat pump can produce condensation. Tell us whether the moisture appears only during heating, continues while the heater is off, or coincides with falling pool water. A photograph and the operating conditions help separate normal drainage from a plumbing or equipment leak. Avoid assuming that every wet equipment pad needs a new heater.

Why does the heater work in spa mode but not pool mode?

Pool and spa settings, valve operation, circulation and automation commands can differ. Report which mode works, the displayed temperature and the selected heating setting. An inspection can then focus on the operating sequence and equipment. Do not bypass a safety switch or keep resetting a fault to force the heater to run.

How much will pool heater service cost?

The diagnosis and the installed equipment determine the repair scope. A component repair, a plumbing leak and a complete replacement require different work. Request the current diagnostic fee and a written scope for the recommended repair. For replacement, compare equipment, connection changes, controls, startup and applicable warranty terms together rather than comparing the heater price alone.
