Dunedin Pool Pump Case Studies

Pump Power and Rodent-Damaged Control Board Assessed in Dunedin
April 2026

Problem: The pump had no power and did not respond to commands from the automation system.

Diagnosis: The breaker behaved as though tripped but initially would not reset. After power was restored, the pump still did not respond through automation or show power at its local display. Inspection found rodent droppings beneath the communication board and a possible burn associated with that activity.

Solution: The pump was separated from automation control for standalone testing.

Recommendation: Replacement of the damaged control board was proposed.

Cracked Pump Volute Followed by Pump and Filter Replacement in Dunedin
March 2026

Problem: Inspection found a crack in the pool pump's volute. Because the damaged housing required replacement of the pump, an installation estimate was prepared.

Solution: A later record for the same property confirms installation of a new pump and filter.

Result: The system was returned to operation with no leaks documented at closeout. The technician also reviewed the pump programming and schedule with the homeowner.

Clogged Suction Line Cleared and Circulation Restored in Dunedin
February 2026

Problem: Debris had obstructed a suction line and interrupted normal circulation. A large amount of leaves was present on the pool floor and around the suction cleaner.

Solution: The technician cleared the line and removed the suction vacuum from the pool so additional leaves would not immediately enter the line.

Result: The pool system returned to operation after the obstruction was cleared.

Recommendation: A leaf-catching device was recommended for the vacuum line, and a quote was requested for a 150-square-foot filter.

Pool-Pump Voltage Configuration Corrected in Dunedin
January 2026

Problem: A Dunedin pool pump was pulsing during operation after the motor had previously been replaced by the homeowner.

Diagnosis: Inspection found that the pump had been wired for 120 volts while its selector was set for 240 volts.

Solution: The pump’s voltage configuration was corrected to the documented 120-volt supply.

Pump-Lid Air Leak Corrected in Dunedin
September 2025

Problem: The pool pump was drawing air through its lid and was not maintaining a full head of water.

Diagnosis: The technician found that the non-original lid required additional tightening to seal correctly.

Solution: The lid was tightened and the circulation system was restarted.

Result: The pump pulled a full head of water after the correction.

Recommendation: A lid-removal and installation tool was recommended for future service of the tight-fitting lid.

Speed-Controller Wiring Repaired in Dunedin

August 2025

Problem: A Dunedin pool pump was not starting after conductors at its speed-controller communication connection were damaged.

Diagnosis: The technician found one red conductor cut and another wire pulled out of the speed-set communication block.

Solution: The affected conductors were stripped back and reinstalled in the communication block.

Result: The pump started immediately after the wiring correction.

Recommendation: Moving the speed-set controller from the pump to a wall-mounted location was recommended, and a quote was requested for that proposed work.

Flood-Damaged Equipment Diagnosis and Replacement Installation in Dunedin
September 2023

Problem: Salt-water flooding affected several pieces of pool equipment at a Dunedin property. The technician found debris lines and rust consistent with water rising approximately one to one-and-a-half feet above ground level.

Diagnosis: The circulation pump showed severe rusting and damaged bearings. The propane heater had extensive internal corrosion affecting the burner chamber, ignition components, gas valve and wiring. Water had also entered the salt cell's flow sensor and connectors. The technician recorded that the automation system still operated and that the lights, spa blower and transformers had remained above the floodwater.

Solution: The subsequent installation record identifies a Jandy ePump variable-speed replacement, a propane heater and salt-system equipment. On September 21, the pump and salt-cell plumbing, electrical connections and communication cables were completed, along with the heater plumbing. The September 22 entry records completion of the heater's gas, electrical and automation connections and programming of the heater and pump.

Result: The installation notes directed that the pump be primed and its breaker switched on once pool salinity reached the specified range.

Two-Horsepower Motor, Seal and Impeller Replacement in Dunedin
December 2019

Problem: This repair replaced the drive components on an existing pool pump. The documented materials included a two-horsepower OEM motor, a PS-200 Viton mechanical seal suited to salt or ozone systems, and a 1.5-horsepower impeller.

Solution: The technician installed the replacement motor and impeller with the new mechanical seal, then restarted the circulation system.

Result: The system was running correctly after installation.

Pump-Circuit GFCI Diagnosis and Breaker Replacement in Dunedin
December 2018

Problem: An EcoStar pool pump had lost reliable electrical power, preventing normal circulation for cleaning and heating.

Diagnosis: The technician traced the immediate failure to a faulty 220-volt GFCI breaker. The blower breaker was temporarily reassigned so the pump could operate while the correct replacement was arranged. During the same inspection, a small pinhole was documented in the EcoStar pump housing and the housing was identified for separate replacement.

Solution: Florida Pool Tech installed the replacement 220-volt GFCI breaker for the pump circuit.

Result: The new breaker was tested and recorded as operating correctly.

Noisy, leaking or losing prime? Describe the pattern

Tell us whether the pump will not start, shuts down during operation, runs with unusual noise or moves less water than usual. Note whether bubbles appear under the lid or at the pool returns, and whether the problem changes when the spa, cleaner or water feature runs. Include the exact display message if the pump has an electronic drive.

Visible water around the pump and air entering the suction side are different clues. A seal, lid connection, union, housing or nearby pipe may need attention; weak circulation can also involve the filter or valves. Inspection of the connected system helps avoid replacing a pump when another component is causing the symptom. Do not keep a pump running if it has lost prime or is running dry.

Repair and replacement decisions depend on the affected component, equipment condition and the installation. Ask the estimate to distinguish motor work, pump replacement and associated plumbing or control changes.

✓ Identify the affected equipment
✓ Review the existing installation
✓ Separate necessary and optional work
✓ Identify related plumbing or controls
✓ Review the written estimate

Motor repair, component repair or a complete pump?

Ask the estimate to identify the failed component and explain the condition of the remaining pump. A serviceable housing with a specific seal or motor problem may support a repair, while damage across the wet end, motor and electronic drive can change the replacement comparison. The decision should reflect the actual equipment and findings.

A replacement proposal should state the pump model and any changes to plumbing, electrical connections or controls. Share existing automation and attached equipment details before ordering. Florida Pool Tech offers name-brand equipment and can discuss Pentair options that suit the installation. Confirm product-specific warranty requirements and included labor with the estimate; coverage is not identical for every purchase or installation.

A pump installation should fit the pool's circulation needs and connected equipment. Discuss the existing plumbing, controls and features, then review the proposed setup and operating instructions.

✓ Share equipment labels and photos
✓ Describe the intended result
✓ Discuss access to the work area
✓ Confirm compatible connections
✓ Review operation and handover

Variable-speed performance depends on setup

A new pump should be selected for the pool's circulation requirements and the resistance of its plumbing, filter and connected equipment. Horsepower alone does not establish the right fit. Identify spa jets, water features, cleaners and heating equipment so the proposed setup accounts for the operating modes you actually use.

Programming matters after installation. Different tasks may need different flow rates, and a low filtration setting must still support the equipment operating at that time. Discuss priming, daily circulation, heating and feature schedules during handover. Energy use depends on the selected pump, operating speeds, run time and site conditions, so ask for assumptions behind any savings estimate rather than treating an advertised maximum as a guaranteed result.

Dunedin Pool Pump Questions

If your pool is losing water, equipment is leaking, or the finish is aging, we can inspect the problem and recommend the right repair path.

Does a noisy pump always need a new motor?

No. Describe whether you hear a hum, squeal, rattle or a sound that changes with speed, and whether circulation has changed. The motor, impeller, water supply and equipment mounting can all be relevant to diagnosis. A short recording taken from a safe distance can help describe the concern before the visit.

Can I use the same pump settings after replacement?

The replacement model and the connected system determine suitable settings. Review filtration, heater operation, salt-system requirements, cleaners and water features with the technician. Ask for an explanation of the programmed schedule and how to recognize a loss of prime or fault. Copying the old run time or choosing the lowest available speed may not meet every operating requirement.

What affects the installed price of a pool pump?

The selected model, condition of the existing plumbing, electrical compatibility, automation connections and access affect the scope. Motor-only work and complete pump replacement are different projects. Request an itemized written estimate and ask whether necessary fittings, startup and programming are included. Photos of the pump label and the complete equipment pad help the team prepare.
